Medical Mission Control

OrbitalMed plans to serve the spaceflight community through the management of the many health-related issues associated with spaceflight. The company was formed to provide the flight certification of commercial astronauts visiting Low Earth Orbit (LEO) through both sub-orbital and extended-orbital missions. The company was founded by Robert Satcher, MD, PhD, and Bernard Harris, MD, both former NASA astronauts, and Philip Hilder, JD. These leaders have leveraged their unique training and experience to provide a new generation of space travelers with medical expertise designed to ensure a safe spaceflight and enhance the on-orbit experience.

OrbitalMed will guide space travelers through the pre-flight medical certification process, provide on-orbit medical counseling for zero-g remediations, and facilitate post-flight re-acclimation to Earth’s gravity. Through pre-flight, flight, and post-flight medical surveillance, OrbitalMed will enable commercial space travelers to perform at their best during the mission and enjoy the unique experience of spaceflight.

Traveling can be tough on the body, especially when you’re traveling to space.

Flying into space involves various hazards that, when properly managed, can be mitigated leading to a productive and beneficial time in Earth orbit.

Whether the mission is a short, sub-orbital flight or an extended stay aboard a space station, the crewmember will be exposed to new hazards in a remote location, away from the usual medical support infrastructure that we enjoy on the planet’s surface.

OrbitalMed’s mission is to be there throughout the entire journey to ensure space travelers enjoy a safe ride to space and back home.
